Currently reading “How to do better creative work” by Steve Harrison… I’m only 5 pages in but already he’s ruffled my feathers a bit. To quote a section from the introduction:
“According to Forrester Technographics research, 25 per cent of the total number of UK internet users use social networking sites once or more a month. The remaining 75 per cent use them once a month or not at all. If you look at those who do use these sites on a daily basis, you’ll see that it’s overwhelmingly students and those aged 16-24. So, while some social networkers are hooked, most others are only occasional users. And, sales directors please note, given the age and occupation of the regular users, most of them are, to put it bluntly, penniless.”
Now, I’m not sure I entirely agree with that. According to the research, I’m at the tail end of the social networking age group, when in reality I think most of the people I follow on Twitter are older than me, as are most of the people showing up in my Facebook feed. It’s a bit insulting that he claims the majority of social networkers are “penniless”. Only a few of my student friends have Twitter; most of my workmates do.
I don’t remember us being in the social networking dark ages in 2009…
